The Department of Cardiovascular Medicine focuses on translational research (spanning from molecular biology through to experimental medicine) and collaborates actively with cardiovascular groups in pre-clinical science departments and the Nuffield Department of Medicine.
Commitment and excellence in training and research has been recognised by the receipt of a British Heart Foundation Centre of Research Excellence Award and also by the BHF 4 year graduate student programme.

RAE 2008
In the 2008 RAE results announced in December, the Department, together with colleagues from stroke research, received the highest quality rating of any cardiovascular medicine return in the country.

BHF Centre of Research Excellence
In 2008 the University of Oxford received an £8.4m award from the British Heart Foundation (BHF) to establish a Centre of Research Excellence (CRE) to enable further research into cardiovascular disease, which is the UK's biggest killer.

Inherited Heart Disease
In the last few years, significant advances have been made in our understanding of the genetic basis of inherited heart disease. The Department of Cardiovascular Medicine has an international reputation for research, and is taking a leading role in translating this new knowledge into improved care for patients and their families.
